Individualized Opportunities for Undergraduates
Opportunities are available for undergraduates to work with BES scientists at universities throughout the country. To explore these options for individualized work, learn about BES scientists on the Participants web page:
http://www.beslter.org/frame3-page_1.asp
and contact scientists directly that you might be interested in working with.
Summer field work opportunities also are announced at:
http://www.umbc.edu/cuere/employment.html and
http://www.beslter.org/frame2-page_12.html.
Internships for Undergraduates
http://www.parksandpeople.org/programs_great_parks.html
Internships are available through the Urban Resources Initiative (URI) that Parks and People Foundation runs in collaboration with BES and other organizations in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Specific opportunities vary from year to year. Examples of previous URI intern projects include development of ecology curriculum for after school programs, implementation of an inventory of environmental education providers, design of landscape plans for schoolyards and creation of an eco-history resource guide for educators.
Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)
Each summer, 1-2 REU opportunities are available to qualified students directly through BES. These positions are funded by supplements from the NSF to the primary BES program grant, and usually involve a 10-12 week independent study in Baltimore with one or more BES scientist. Students receive stipends and a small budget for their research expenses. For more information contact the BES Project Facilitator, Holly Beyar, at beyarh@ecostudies.org.
The Institute for Ecosystem Studies’ (REU) program provides an opportunity for students to conduct independent research in ecology with scientists at a renowned research institute. Students receive a stipend of $4,800 for their participation in the program, which runs for 12-weeks from the end of May to late August, as well as free housing and a food allowance. Students of diverse backgrounds come from different parts of the country to participate in the program. Past IES REU students, working with BES scientists, made Baltimore the focus of their REU project. For example, a recent student sampled two urban/degraded, two restored, and two forested/natural riparian zones in the Baltimore area to look at the effectiveness of current restoration efforts to bring a degraded urban stream back to a semi-natural stream and to assess if restoration was working to halt or reverse eutrophication. For more information about the IES REU program, contact the Pat Zolnik, REU Coordinator, at zolnikp@ecostudies.org, or go to the website: http://www.ecostudies.org/reu.html

SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology, Education, Development, and Sustainability)
The SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology, Education, Development, and Sustainability) program was initiated when Dan Durret from the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and Dr. Alan Berkowitz (representing both the Ecological Society of America (ESA) and IES) joined forces in 1996 to increase the number of minorities in ecology. This was one of the first collaborative efforts between a scientific professional society and a consortium of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The program has been tremendously successful in establishing ecology programs at 10 HBCU's, recruiting a new group of minority students into ecology graduate programs and careers, developing faculty interest, and giving purpose and direction to the work of the ESA in education and diversity issues. After nurturing the program through its first 6 years, Dr. Berkowitz and IES proudly handed it off to the ESA, which already has secured continued funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
BES hosted a SEEDS field trip in 2003, the first of what has become an extremely popular series of field trips at LTER and similar sites offered by SEEDS to students nationwide. BES looks forward to other opportunities to work with talented undergraduates through this program. For more information on undergraduate research fellowships and student field trips, which in the past have included Baltimore as a destination, visit the Ecological Society of America SEEDS Program.

BCEB (Baltimore Collaborative for Environmental Biology)
The Baltimore Collaborative for Environmental Biology (BCEB), under the direction of BES Co-Principal Investigators Dr. Jane Wolfson and Dr. Alan Berkowitz, provided ecological research experiences to 24 undergraduate students between 2000 and 2005. This program placed selected students into a two year mentoring project with faculty from local research institutions including Towson University, UMBC, Johns Hopkins University, the Center for Marine Biotechnology, and the US Forest Service.
