Opportunities for Graduate Students

Individualized Opportunities for Graduate Students

Opportunities are available for graduate students to work with BES scientists at universities throughout the country. To explore these options for individualized work, learn about BES scientists on the Participants web page (Online HERE) and contact scientists directly that you might be interested in working with.

Summer field work opportunities also are posted at:

Internships for Graduate Students

Internships are available through the Urban Resources Initiative (URI) that Parks and People Foundation runs in collaboration with BES and other organizations in the Baltimore metropolitan area. Specific opportunities vary from year to year. Previous graduate student URI intern projects included development of educational materials, research instruments and investigation aids. Examples include:

  • Tree Treasures: A Series of Activities for Elementary School Age Children. Shannon Galbraith, BES Education URI Intern. 2003
  • Ecology Teaching Study Survey Instrument. In-Depth Study of Teaching In An Integrated Environmental Science High School.
Carol Rinke, BES Education URI Intern 2004. (Online information HERE; Citations HERE and HERE. )
  • Surveying the Status of Ecology Teaching in Watershed 263: An Urban Stormshed.
Stephanie Marudas, BES Education URI Intern. 2004
    Citation HERE.
  • After-school Program Urban Ecology Curriculum. BES Education URI Interns Marianne Butler 2005 and Emily Reisner 2006.
  • Baltimore Eco-History Resource Guide.

Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT)

Also see: http://www.umbc.edu/cuere/igert/

Under the direction of BES Co-PI Claire Welty, UMBC now offers “Water in the Urban Environment” with support from the National Science Foundation’s Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program. The program provides multidisciplinary training towards the Ph.D., exploring solutions to complex problems associated with the effect of urbanization on the water cycle that require integrated ecological, economic, engineering and policy-making approaches. This program will train a generation of PhD students who understand these linkages and are prepared to work in multidisciplinary teams to improve understanding and management of urban environmental systems. The program is centered on three interwoven themes: (1) urban hydrology and contaminant transport; (2) urban biogeochemical cycles, aquatic ecosystems, and human health; and (3) urban water policy, management, and institutions.
