Opportunities for Educators
|
|
BES Educator Tommy S. Parker at Franklin Park Elementary School
|
Educator involvement is integral to achievement of the BES mission. Opportunities exist for educators working with students at every stage of learning --- K-12, undergraduate, and graduate. Teachers involved in after school, community or summer groups are also welcome to share our resources. Educators can learn with us and also directly contribute to answering one of the three central questions of the BES Project:
How can urban residents develop and use an understanding of the metropolis as an ecological system to improve the quality of their environment and their daily lives?
- Research Experiences for Teachers
Research Experience for Teachers (RET) Fellowships are usually available for 1-2 teachers each year through the Baltimore Ecosystem Study in Baltimore. Teachers spend 4-6 weeks joining an ecology research team, carrying out their own research, and developing applications and lessons for their use with students. Fellows receive a stipend, a fund for travel and supplies, and research support from scientists and educators. More information is available [here]
An example of a past RET project can be found [here].
- Workshops for Teachers: Investigating Urban Ecosystems Series
Receive 8 days of Summer Workshop; Lessons and resources designed for use in your science classes; Support from project scientists and educators as you teach during the year; Feedback on student thinking about topics in environmental science, and 5 follow-up workshops during the 2009-2010 school year. Download the flyer [here].
