Opportunities for Educators - Workshops for High School Teachers: Investigating Urban Ecosystems Series
Investigations in Urban Soils: Earthworm Ecology
BES science educators and scientists teamed up to present a 2 ½ day workshop to eight middle school science teachers on exploring urban soils and investigating earthworms in the city. The workshop was based on a unit developed by BES Education Fellow Jenny Harvey, who, at the time, was a middle school science teacher at Barclay Elementary/Middle, a Baltimore City Public School. Harvey worked closely with BES scientists Richard Pouyat, Katalin Szlavecz, and Ian Yesilonis to develop the unit. The workshop provided mini-lectures on soil and earthworms, an opportunity to design and conduct earthworm investigations, observation of soil sampling techniques and ample opportunity to review the Watershed Unit and develop individualized plans for classroom implementation.
