Linking the Ecology of Food Production to Nutrition: If I Am What I Eat I'm In Trouble

Abstract: Urban youth need after school supervision. Demands continue for student achievement. Obesity is skyrocketing. In response to these forces we developed an innovative unit (Ecology of Food, Agriculture & Nutrition) for use in two Parks and People school-based after school programs serving low-income children from 2nd - 7th grades. The curriculum is grounded in the study and enjoyment of Baltimore's urban ecosystem. The lessons provide a balance of inquiry, trips, stewardship, outdoor experiences and leadership development
