Title: Social Stratification Indices, 1970, Gwynns Falls Watershed, Baltimore, Maryland BES Dataset ID: 59
J. Morgan Grove , Email: jmgrove@att.net 1996-6-1 Baltimore Ecosystem Study, BES, Class, environmental equity, environmental justice, Power, Race, Status, Wealth Baltimore, Maryland Not Available Link to EML
Abstract: The selection of variables and indices for the classification of block groups used the theoretical parameters identified by Logan and Molotch (1987), Choldin (1984) and Bullard (1990) in addition to adjustments recommended by Johnston (1976), Murdie (1976), and Hamm (1982). This method has been applied and tested previously for a number of cities in the United States. These earlier studies indicated that this social areas approach was appropriate for measuring residential social stratification (Bogue and Bogue 1976; Johnston 1976; Murdie 1976; Bogue 1984a; Bogue 1984b; Frisbie and Kasarda 1988). In order to construct the indices, socio-economic and household data were obtained from the 1970, 1980, and 1990 Census.

Title: National Land Cover Dataset (BES subset) BES Dataset ID: 80
Austin Troy , Email: atroy@zoo.uvm.edu 1999-5-27 Land Use, Land Cover, NLCD Burlington, VT 05405 Link to Dataset Link to EML
Abstract: These data can be used in a geographic information system (GIS) for any number of purposes such assessing wildlife habitat, water quality, pesticide runoff, land use change, etc. The State data sets are provided with a 300 meter buffer beyond the State border to faciliate combining the State files into larger regions. The user must have a firm understanding of how the datasets were compiled andthe resulting limitations of these data. The National Land Cover Dataset was compiled from Landsat satellite TM imagery (circa 1992) with a spatial resolution of 30 meters and supplemented by various ancillary data (where available). The analysis and interpretation of the satellite imagery was conducted using very large, sometimes multi-State image mosaics (i.e. up to 18 Landsat scenes). Using a relatively small number of aerial photographs for 'ground truth', the thematic interpretations were necessarily conducted from a spatially-broad perspective. Furthermore, the accuracy assessments (see below) correspond to 'federal regions' which are groupings of contiguous States. Thus, the reliability of the data is greatest at the State or multi-State level. The statistical accuracy of the data is known only for the region. Important Caution Advisory With this in mind, users are cautioned to carefully scrutinize the data to see if they are of sufficient reliability before attempting to use the dataset for larger-scale or local analyses. This evaluation must be made that the NLCD represents conditions in the early 1990s. The Maryland portion of the NLCD was created as part of land cover mapping activities for Federal Region III that includes the States of, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia. The NLCD classification contains 21 different land cover categories with a spatial resolution of 30 meters. The NLCD was produced as a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to produce a, land cover data layer for the conterminous U.S. using early 1990s Landsat thematic mapper (TM) data purchased by the Multi-resolution Characterization (MRLC) Consortium. The MRLC Consortium is a partnership of federal agencies that produce or use land cover data. Partners include the USGS (National Mapping, Biological Resources, and Divisions), US EPA, the U.S. Forest Service, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Austin Troy , Email: atroy@zoo.uvm.edu 1905-6-24 DEM, SRTM, Digital Elevation Model, Topography, Elevation Burlington, VT 05405 Link to Dataset Link to EML
Abstract: Note: This an initial release of the SRTM dataset, errors do exist. The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, launched on Feb. 11, 2000. SRTM used the same radar instrument that comprised the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) that flew twice on the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 1994. SRTM was assigned to collect 3-D measurements of the Earth's surface. To collect the 3-D data, engineers added a 60-meter (approximately 200-foot) mast, installed additional C-band and X-band antennas, and improved tracking and navigation devices. The mission is a cooperative project between NASA, the National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) of the U.S. Department of Defense and the German and Italian space agencies. It is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Pasadena, CA, for NASA's Earth Science Enterprise, Washington, D.C.

Title: BES Roads BES Dataset ID: 108
Austin Troy , Email: atroy@zoo.uvm.edu 2002-12-12 Roads, Transportation, Infrastructure Burlington, VT 05405 Link to Dataset Link to EML
Abstract: BES subset of the national TIGER road data; contains road networks for the following counties: Carroll, Howard, Anne Arundel, Baltimore County, Baltimore City, and Harford. TIGER, TIGER/Line, and Census TIGER are registered trademarks of the U.S. Census Bureau. ZCTA is a trademark of the U.S. Census Bureau. The Census 2000 TIGER/Line files are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census TIGER data base. The geographic coverage for a single TIGER/Line file is a county or statistical equivalent entity, with the coverage area based on January 1, 2000 legal boundaries. A complete set of census 2000 TIGER/Line files includes all counties and statistically equivalent entities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas. The Census TIGER data base represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts. However, each county-based TIGER/Line file is designed to stand alone as an independent data set or the files can be combined to cover the whole Nation. The Census 2000 TIGER/Line files consist of line segments representing physical features and governmental and statistical boundaries. The boundary information in the TIGER/Line files are for statistical data collection and tabulation purposes only; their depiction and designation for statistical purposes does not constitute a determination of jurisdictional authority or rights of ownership or entitlement. The Census 2000 TIGER/Line files do NOT contain the Census 2000 urban areas which have not yet been delineated. The files contain information distributed over a series of record types for the spatial objects of a county. There are 17 record types, including the basic data record, the shape coordinate points, and geographic codes that can be used with appropriate software to prepare maps. Other geographic information contained in the files includes attributes such as feature identifiers/census feature class codes (CFCC) used to differentiate feature types, address ranges and ZIP Codes, codes for legal and statistical entities, latitude/longitude coordinates of linear and point features, landmark point features, area landmarks, key geographic features, and area boundaries. The Census 2000 TIGER/Line data dictionary contains a complete list of all the fields in the 17 record types

Title: Baltimore County and Baltimore City Forest Areas by Commercial Types (circa 1914). BES Dataset ID: 109
Morgan Grove , Email: mgrove@fs.fed.us 2002-11-18 Forestry, Timber, Historical Burlington, VT 05405 Link to Dataset Link to EML
Abstract: Note: Full metadata pending Buckley. Forest areas by commercial type for Baltimore County and City circa 1914. Forest types identified include merchantable hardwoods, culled hardwoods, hardwood saplings, scrub pine, scrub pine saplings, and mixed hardwoods and scrub pine. Statistical data on the amount of saw timber per acre by forest type is also presented. In addition to showing the forest stand data the map has very detailed transportation, urban area, hydrological, and topographic features. The map was scanned at a resolution of approximately 4.3 meters, it was then georeferenced using 22 control points from 1:100000 hydrologic and transportation data and rectified to UTM Zone 18N, NAD83. The cell size on the rectified map was set to 10m in order to reduce the size of the rectified map. A full resolution version is available on request. Please use caution when using this dataset since significant positional inaccuracies to exist.

Title: BES Roads BES Dataset ID: 163

BES Dataset ID: 164
Austin Troy , Email: atroy@zoo.uvm.edu 2002-11-18 Forestry, Timber, Historical Burlington, VT 05405 Link to Dataset Link to EML

Title: National Land Cover Dataset (BES subset) BES Dataset ID: 165

The database provides visual and historical perspective of the urban growth experienced in the area between 1792 and 1992. Data on built-up areas exists as separate geographic layers for the dates: 1792, 1801, 1822, 1850, 1878, 1900, 1925, 1938, 1953, 1966, 1972, 1982, and 1992. Temporal urban mapping reconstructs past landscapes by incorporating historic maps, census statistics, and commerce records to generate a progressive geo-referenced picture of the past changes in a region. Contemporary mapping focuses on the use of remotely sensed data, existing digital land use data, digital census information, and a variety of earth science infrastructure data, such as Digital Line Graphs, Digital Elevation Models, and key ancillary demographic information. Different procedures were used for different time periods, more fully described for each file in the Process Step Section 2.5.2. The resulting database of temporal urban land use/land cover and demographic changes provides an ideal source of test data and information for both urban geographers and global change research scientists. While this dataset was developed by the University of Maryland Baltimore County final quality control and metadata generation was performed by the University of Vermont's Spatial Analysis Lab. Two significant problems were noted regarding this dataset. The first anomoly is that the 1801, 1822, and 1878 layers have a much smaller extent, and contain data only for Baltimore City. The second discrepancy is that there are also some very obvious positional errors causing misalignments between layers of different dates (i.e. urban areas become non-urban in a very short time period, an unlikely occurance).

Abstract: The National Land Cover Database 2001 land cover layer for mapping zone 60 was produced through a cooperative project conducted by the Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics (MRLC) Consortium. The MRLC Consortium is a partnership of federal agencies (www.mrlc.gov), consisting of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service (USFS), the National Park Service (NPS), the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). One of the primary goals of the project is to generate a current, consistent, seamless, and accurate National Land cover Database (NLCD) circa 2001 for the United States at medium spatial resolution. For a detailed definition and discussion on MRLC and the NLCD 2001 products, refer to Homer et al. (2003) and . The NLCD 2001 is created by partitioning the U.S. into mapping zones. A total of 66 mapping zones were delineated within the conterminous U.S. based on ecoregion and geographical characteristics, edgematching features and the size requirement of Landsat mosaics. Mapping zone 60 encompasses whole or portions of several states in the mid-Atlantic region, including the states of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the District of Columbia. Questions about the NLCD mapping zone 60 can be directed to the NLCD 2001 land cover mapping team at the USGS EROS Data Center (EDC), Sioux Falls, SD (605) 594-6151 or mrlc@usgs.gov.

Title: National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) 1992 BES Dataset ID: 212
USGS 1999-5-27 Land Use/Land Cover, NA in xml file NA in xml file Not Available Link to EML
